Planting flowers to create specific designs?

I'm having a hard time describing what I'm asking for...

Okay, back when I was a child, I went to Disneyland. I recall that near the entrance was a flowerbed. The flowers had been planted and grown so that once they'd bloomed, the flowerbed looked like Mickey Mouse's face (made entirely of flowers).

Is there a name for this particular style of planting / growing / arranging flowers so that the eventual outcome resembles a picture of something?

Does anybody know of any internet links or resources for learning more about this?

I couldn't find anything on wikipedia.

Planting flowers to create specific designs?
Hi:

I am a landscaper and designer. This is what I call designing within a design. It is considered mass planting and your goal is how you place the flowers.

Even if you can't draw, go ahead and draw your figure or what your goal is on paper. Think about what flowers you want to plant where. Outside, take landscaping chalk or a hose and make the figure on the ground. Pick out your plant specimens and place them within the figure in their pots. Play with this until you get the results you are looking for.

I hope this helps and if I can help you out, let me know. I am not an artist by all means, but I will link you to the examples of landscape designs on my website. My clients like the hand drawn designs so they can see the colors and shapes. I will also link you to the site map, as this has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if you can find any other information that may help you. Good luck to you and have a great day!

Reply:there are a lot of plants and flowers that you can use. The trick is that you do not want anything that grows fast as it will grow out of the design you have.

One way to find out would be to ask at a gardening centre.

Most centres employ at least one person who is a "master gardener"who knows a lot about a lot.

good luck
Reply:I know what you're talking about, don't know if it has a specific name other than "landscaping". You could check out Better Home and Gardens on line (I think the link is http://bhg.com ) for landscaping, or look up floral nurseries on line to see if they have landscaping ideas. Also check out these specific sites:

http://www.DirectGardening.com %26amp; http://www.Gurneys.com

Those 2 sites show some landscaping ideas. I guess you just figure out the design you want, buy the flowers/plants and plant them to get your design. Hope that helps!
Reply:perhaps contacting these folks , you might get some pointers or be told where to find more info....

simple,really... just takes a good choice of plant material... something compact that's not going to spread out TOO much.. and a great plan..... and plants that like the same area!!!.....
